Malacca Straits on Broadway

I have read about this Malaysian restaurant in Broadway in various blogs and also heard it was one of the Malaysian restaurants that took part in the recent Malaysia Kitchen event in Sydney. Naturally, I was keen to check it out. According to the website, Chef Tan is a former chef in two other famous Malaysian restaurants in Sydney - The Malaya (now located at King St Wharf) and Neptune Palace at Circular Quay. He is also a former Executive Chef for Malaysia Airlines.  I have eaten at The Malaya many years ago and was not impressed with the Malaysian food served there. I found the dishes 'watered' down to cater to non-Malaysians. This made me even more curious to taste the dishes. I went with my Mum and her friend, Aunty Rani. Since there were only three of us, we ordered three meals and shared amongst us.

Ayam Goreng with Chicken Rice (Apologies for the messiness)
It's similar to the Hainanese chicken rice but served with fried chicken instead. The rice was fragrant and flavoursome, cooked in chicken stock. We also liked the crispy chicken. Our only complaint was the chilli sauce did not have much flavour and did not any hint of chilli at all.

Mee Goreng
This noodle dish had the right level of sambal chilli and the bean sprouts had a crunchy bite. It was served with quite a number of large juicy and succulent prawns. Will definitely order this again.

Char Koay Teow (Fried Rice Noodles)
My Mum commented there was good 'wok hei' that gave the koay teow (rice noodle) a good 'char'. Like the Mee Goreng, it was served with large prawns as well. You can also have the char koay teow with chicken or beef. This version of char koay teow is on the sweet side. To be honest, I prefer the thinner koay teow.

My Mum is a very good Malaysian cook and is fussy about eating Malaysian dishes outside. I asked her if she will come again and she said we should return with the rest of the family. Enough said!

  1. Charmaine, I've been to Malacca Straits on Broadway; its quite good. I agree with your mum that the char koay teow has a good 'char'. They have a little 'stall' at a food court in North Sydney. That outlet is not as good.
