Mamak, Chatswood

A number of food blogs have written about this famous and popular Malaysian restaurant in Sydney's Chinatown. About a month ago, on the auspicious date 10.10.10, Mamak opened a branch in Chatswood, in Sydney's Lower North Shore. We have read and heard about this place from friends but have never tried. Tonight, we went with our friends for dinner. We had to wait for about 20 minutes for our table, despite arriving at the restaurant half an hour after the place opened.  I am told the queue is not as long as the queue at the Chinatown branch. Once seated, the waiter came round to take our orders and the food arrived quickly, probably because most of the meals were pre-prepared, rather than cook to order.

We love the freshly made rotis - Ashleigh ordered the roti planta, which she preferred to the plain roti canai that Caitlin ordered. Hubs ordered the roti bawang (onion), which he enjoyed, commenting that it had a good balance of sweetness from the onion and chilli heat from the curries. I had the nasi lemak with sambal prawns - the coconut rice was not too 'lemak' (rich) but the sambal had a good bite. We also ordered a plate of ayam goreng (fried chicken) to share - delicious and crunchy, but it was not steaming hot. The rotis is served with two curries - dhal and chicken/fish curry. I was not too impressed with the curries, because it was served at room temperature on the cool side, rather than piping hot.

For dessert we had roti tisu, a cone-shaped roti (like a hat) crunchy and sprinkled with sugar. Ashleigh enjoyed her milo ais (ice milo), commenting that it tasted better than the milo ais in Malaysia. Hubs' kopi tarik ('pulled' hot coffee) was perfect with the right amount of sweetness.

The menu at Mamak is not extensive, primarily focus on roti and satay, unlike other Malaysian restaurants like Makan @ Alice or Sambal. Their popular dishes are the different varieties of roti. I would prefer it as a place for lunch or late supper. I am told that Mamak is opened till late on Fridays and Saturdays.

  3. I'm so glad they opened a northern location so I can get my roti fix :) The curries for the roti weren't piping hot when we went either now that I think about it, but a lot of places in KL are the same I guess.
